Dosakaya Pappu or Andhra Style Yellow Cucumber Dal is a delicious dal made with toor dal and yellow cucumbers. It can be served with both rice or roti. It is a thick dal made using dosakaya, onions, tomatoes, tamarind, green chilies, and aromatic tempering.
Ingredients (For Dal)
- 1 Cup Toor Dal
- 1 Dosakaya
- 2 Tablespoons Oil
- 4 Green Chilies
- 1 Large Chopped Tomato
- 1 Small Chopped Onion
- 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 1 1/2 Teaspoon Red Chili Powder
- 1 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
- 1/4 Teaspoon Methi Seeds
- 1/2 Cup Tamarind Extract
- Chopped Coriander Leaves
Ingredients (For Seasoning)
- 1 Tablespoon Oil
- 1/2 Teaspoon Jeera
- 1/2 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
- Few Dry Red Chilies
- 4 Crushed Garlic
- Few Curry Leaves
Method
Step 1
Wash 1 cup toor dal and add it to the pressure cooker. Add 1 cup water, 1/2 cup turmeric powder and close the lid and cook for 3 whistles.
Step 2
Once the dal is cooked, mash the dal and keep it aside.
Step 3
Peel the skin off from dosakaya. Cut into half and take out the seeds from dosakaya. Cut into pieces and keep them aside.
Step 4
Heat 2 tablespoons of oil and add 4 green chilies, 1 large tomato, chopped dosakaya pieces, 1 small chopped onion, and sauté well.
Step 5
Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder, 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds, and mix well. Close the lid and cook for 3 minutes.
Step 6
Add cooked toor dal, 1/2 cup water, and mix well. Close the lid and cook for 2 minutes.
Step 7
Add 1/2 cup tamarind extract and mix well. Boil the dal for 2 minutes.
Step 8
Add chopped coriander leaves. Mix well and keep it on a low flame.
Step 9
Heat 1 tablespoon oil and add 1/2 teaspoon jeera, 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds, few dry red chilies, 4 crushed garlic, few curry leaves. Sauté well and turn off the stove.
Step 10
Add the seasoning to the boiling dal and turn off the stove.
Step 11
Serve hot with Rice or Roti.
