Black salt or Kala namak has been used in Ayurvedic medicines and therapies for centuries, thanks to its numerous health benefits. A natural rock salt, it owes its rich dark color to all the iron and other essential minerals that it contains. The salt takes on a light pink tone when ground into a fine powder.

What is Black Salt?

 

There are different types of black salt; Himalayan black salt is the most common.

It’s a rock salt it comes from the salt mines of Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and other locations in the Himalayas.

The use of black salt was first documented in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional and holistic approach to health that originated in India.

Ayurvedic healers claim that Himalayan black salt has therapeutic qualities. However, it’s debatable whether these claims are rooted in solid research.

Interestingly, despite its name, Himalayan black salt is pinkish-brown in color.

 

Types of Black Salt

 

There are three main types of black salt: Himalayan black salt, black lava salt, and black ritual salt.

1. Himalayan Black Salt

Himalayan black salt may also be called Indian black salt, or Kala namak.

2. Black Lava Salt

You may see black lava salt also called Hawaiian black salt, as it usually comes from Hawaii.

While Himalayan black salt has a pinkish-brown hue, black lava salt is true to its name and black.

3. Black Ritual Salt

Black ritual salt, also referred to as witches salt, is a mixture of ashes, sea salt, charcoal, and sometimes black dye. It’s not used for consumption.

 

Health Benefits of Black Salt

 

1. Aids Weight Loss

Since black salt contains less sodium than regular table salt, it doesn’t cause water retention and bloating. So it makes for an excellent alternative to white salt if you’re on a low-sodium diet and aiming to lose weight.

2. Prevents Muscle Spasms and Cramps

Black salt not only contains small amounts of potassium, which is crucial to muscle functioning, but it also helps the body absorb the essential mineral. This makes it very effective in preventing painful muscle spasms and cramps.

3. Treats Acidity

The alkaline properties of black salt help reduce excess acid in the stomach, and its high mineral content lessens the damage caused by acid reflux.

4. Laxactive Benefits

Black salt is also known for its laxative benefits, as it improves digestion and also alleviates intestinal gas. It makes an effective home remedy for constipation when combined with lemon juice and ginger.

5. Promotes Healthy Hair

The essential minerals in black salt are known to boost hair growth, strengthen weak hair and even prevent split ends. Including black salt in your diet can also help arrest hair fall, reduce dandruff, and promote healthy, lustrous hair.
